Fish with Jim !!!

I do it all here in Mazatlan. I offer near shore, off shore, inshore, mangrove, surf fishing, float tubing, and freshwater fishing. If I don't have the boat for your needs then I refer you to someone who does. I know what's biting and where.

I have fished my entire fifty-three years from the time I was ten. I fished in San Diego for twenty of those years. This gave me plenty of experience in fishing tuna, Dorado, and Marlin. I have always owned a boat and took many long range trips from San Diego also. I was also a guide on the Salton Sea for four years, where I fished for orange mouth corvina. I then moved to the bay area and fished the delta and San Francisco bay. I learned to fish stripers, sturgeon, salmon, and largemouth bass in the Delta.

I offer offshore trips in my 26 foot Aquasport sportfisher. It is powered by a single 250 hp Johnson outboard. We cruise at 4000 rpm at 28 miles per hour. This gives us the speed when the weather is suitable to get to the fishing grounds faster than almost any boat in the fleet here in Mazatlan. We have a built in bait tank for when we can acquire live bait. We can sometimes purchase bait but more likely we will attempt to catch it whenever possible. We normally bring frozen bait and that can also be effective at times.

The boat is equipped with twelve foot outriggers and has the ability to troll five lines. The boat is a walk around cuddy cabin model and allows for you to follow your fish around the boat when necessary. This is a big advantage when you have multiple hookups and it is impossible to maneuver the boat for more than one fish on.

We have a variety of rods and reels on board. We use shimano tld two speeds and Penn reels with a variety of cal star and other high quality rods. We typically carry at least eight rods and reels on board, some for trolling and some for live bait and or casting. We also have a built in fish box below decks that can accommodate all but the very biggest fish. We of course carry ice to keep the catch fresh as possible. All fish cleaning is done back at the docks to conform to Mexican fishing regulations.

We have a ray marine A 60 combo fish finder and chart plotter. This is a hi tech advance piece of electronics. It is very helpful in contributing to a successful day on the water. We also carry all the safety equipment on board. Life vests, vhf radio, cell phone, flare gun and hand flares, and also an epirb. Safety is our number one priority at all times.

I normally run all trips and sometimes bring a mate to handle some of the fishing duties. Depending on the clients and their fishing abilities you are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the fishing trip. Fishing is a team sport and we try to operate as a team whenever possible.

One of my favorite trips is to fish the Surfacing jack crevalles at the nearby islands. I have discovered how to make them bite and we can frequently catch 20-30 of the hard fighting jacks in a morning. I typically fish them with twenty pound line and light weight rods. These fish often average 15-20 pounds. December to April is when we normally have the Toros here in Mazatlan, although they can be caught all year.

I also fish the surf line for rooster fish when they are here. We can slow troll live bait and we can also sometimes catch them on lures. These fish are usually close to home also, along the beach at Cerritos and also above Bruja point. The roosters are here almost all year and seem to go in spurts. We often fish the jacks at the islands and then fish the surfline for roosters and corvina the same day.

We also have great corvina fishing at times. We fish these in the surf line or just outside of it. We can fish these in the boat or in the float tube. These fish run 2-30 pounds with about an eight pound average. We also frequently catch pargo, sierra, snook, and snapper in the same area. The corvina is here in Mazatlan typically from about December until June.

The Dorado fishing is best from about June until late fall, about November. It really gets good in the summer during the rainy season when the debris is washed to sea by the heavy summer rains. These fish are often found within a few miles of shore and can be easily caught by fishing around the debris or the buoys. Sailfish and blue marlin can be caught at the same time and in the same areas. Most of the time you need to find the blue water for these species. Some days that mean 30 miles offshore and some days it means two miles.

Striped marlin fishing can be good and usually occurs from about December until June. These are typically caught with lures or dead bait. Ballyhoo and mullet are the most common baits.

Yellowfin tuna are here all year round. We have a large fleet of super seiners here in Mazatlan and although they are not supposed to fish within fifty miles of shore they normally eliminate any prolonged tuna bite close to home. The best time of the year seems to be January to April when the tuna can be caught as close as ten miles. You need to get on them right away when they are here as the seiners normally wrap the school and the remaining fish disappear very quickly.
